  2. I was reading yesterday about phobias and discovered that to truly have a phobia you have to be afraid of the thing itself. So, for example, it's possible to have a phobia of amputees, and so be scared of coming into contact with someone with an amputated limb. But it's not possible to have a phobia that you might one day become an amputee–apparently, that just means you have an anxiety of some kind.

    Apparently, also, you can have phobias that manifest as a metaphor for what you're truly afraid of. For example: you've always lived a life of mediocrity, never really put much effort into anything, never tried to get ahead or had much ambition. So your mind manifests a phobia of ladders: symbolizing your inability to 'climb' higher in life…

    The mind is so fascinating!
